Though Mee wasn’t renowned for his coaching skills, he compensated for this by delegating such duties to Dave Sexton and Don Howe. His primary focus was instilling discipline and attention to detail, which won him respect and raised standards at the club.

Mee utilized a new generation of players who had won the Youth Cup in 1966. He led the team to back-to-back League Cup Finals in 1968 and 1969. Despite losing both finals, these achievements marked the resurgence of Arsenal as a contender for major trophies.

Arsenal secured their first European trophy under Mee’s guidance, winning the 1970 Fairs Cup. Despite trailing Anderlecht 3-0 in the final’s first leg, they came back to win 4-3 on aggregate, marking the club’s first trophy in 17 years.

Mee’s most significant achievement was leading Arsenal to a domestic “Double” in the 1970/71 season. The team won the league title with a 1-0 victory at Tottenham, and five days later, they secured the FA Cup with a 2-1 win against Liverpool.

Despite criticism for allowing the Double-winning team to disperse too quickly, Mee’s legacy at Arsenal is undeniably significant. He passed away in 2001, aged 82, but he remains a beloved figure in Arsenal’s history for bringing success back to Highbury.
